The truth about Jihad |
In the linguistic sense, the Arabic word"jihad"means struggling or striving and
applies to any effortexerted by anyone. In this sense
a student struggles and strives to get aneducation
and pass course work; an employee strives to fulfill his/her joband maintain good relations with his/her employer; a
politician strives tomaintain or increase his
popularity with his constituents and so on. Theterm
strive or struggle may be used for/by Muslims as well non-Muslims; forexample, Allah, One and Only True God says in the Qur'an: We haveenjoined on people kindness to
parents; but if they strive (jahadaka) tomake you ascribe partners with Me that of which you have
no knowledge, thenobey them not...(Qur'an 29:8, also see 31:15).
In theabove two verses of the Qur'an,
it is non-Muslim parents who strive (jahada)to convert their Muslim child back to their religion.
In theWest,"jihad"is generally translated as"holy war", ausage
the media has popularized. According to Islamic teachings, it isunholy to instigate or start war; however, some wars are
inevitable andjustifiable. If we translate the words"holy war"back
into Arabicwe find"harbun
muqaddasatun", or for"the
holy war","al-harbu al-muqaddasatu".
We challenge any researcher or scholarto find the
meaning of"jihad"as holy war in the Qur'an orauthentic Hadith collections or in early Islamic literature. Unfortunately, some Muslim writers
and translators of the Qur'an, the Hadith and otherIslamic
literature translate the term"jihad"as"holywar",
due to the influence of centuries-old Western propaganda. Thiscould
be a reflection of the Christian use of the term"Holy
War"to refer to the Crusades of a thousand years
ago. However, the Arabic wordsfor"war"are"harb"or"qital", which arefound in the Qur'an and Hadith.
ForMuslims the term jihad is applied to all forms of
striving and has developedsome special meanings over
time. The sources of this development are theQur'an
(the Word of God revealed to Prophet Muhammad) and the Hadith(teachings of Prophet
Muhammad. The Qur'an and the Hadith
use the word"jihad"in several different
contexts which are given below:
1. Recognizing the Creator andloving Him most.
It is human nature to love what is seen with the eyes and felt with thesenses more than the UNSEEN REALITY. The Creator of the
Universe and theOne God is Allah. He is the Unseen
Reality which we tend to ignore and notrecognize. The
Qur'an addresses those who claim to be believers:O you who believe! Choose
not your fathers nor your brethren forprotectors
if they love disbelief over belief; whoever of you takes themfor
protectors, such are wrong-doers. Say: if your fathers, and yourchildren,
and your brethren, and your spouses, and your tribe, and thewealth
you have acquired, and business for which you fear shrinkage, andhouses you are pleased with are dearer to you than Allah
and His Messengerand striving in His way: then wait
till Allah brings His command to pass.Allah does not
guide disobedient folk(Qur'an 9:23,24).
It is indeed a struggle to put Allah ahead of our loved ones, our wealth, our worldly ambitions and
our own lives. Especially for a non-Muslim whoembraces
Islam, it may be a tough struggle due to the opposition of hisfamily,
peers and society.
2. Resisting pressure of parents, peers and society.
Once a person has made up his mind to put the Creator of the Universeabove all else, he often comes under intense
pressures. It is not easy toresist such pressures and
strive to maintain dedication and love of Allahover
all else. A person who has turned to Islam from another religion maybe
subjected to pressures designed to turn him back to the religion of thefamily. We read in the Qur'an:
So obey not the rejecters offaith, but strive (jahidhum) against them by it (the Qur'an)
with a greatendeavor(Qur'an 25:52).
3. Staying on the straight path steadfastly.
Allah says in the Qur'an: And strive (jahidu) for Allah with theendeavor
(jihadihi) which is His right. He has chosen you and
has not laidupon you in the deen
(religion) any hardship ...(Qur'an 22:78). And whosoever strives (jahada),
strives (yujahidu) only forhimself,
for lo! Allah is altogether independent of the universe(Qur'an
29:6).
As for those who strive and struggle to live as true Muslims whose livesare made difficult due to persecution by their
opponents, they are advisedto migrate to a more
peaceful and tolerant land and continue with theirstruggle
in the cause of Allah. Allah says in the Qur'an:
Lo! Asfor those whom the angels take (in death)
while they wronged themselves,(the angels) will ask:
in what you were engaged? They will say: we wereoppressed
in the land. (The angels) will say: was not Allah's earthspacious
that you could have migrated therein? ...(Qur'an4:97). Lo! those
who believe, and those who emigrate (to escapepersecution)
and strive (jahadu) in the way of Allah, these have
hope ofAllah's mercy ...(Qur'an 2:218).
Allah tests the believers in their faith and their steadfastness:Or did you think that you
would enter
We find that the Prophet Muhammad and his clan were boycotted socially andeconomically for three years to force him to stop his
message andcompromise with the pagans but he resisted
and realized a moral victory.
4. Striving for righteous deeds.
Allah declares in the Qur'an: As for those who strive (jahadu) inUs (the cause of
Allah), We surely guide them to Our paths, and lo! Allahis
with the good doers(Qur'an 29:69).
When we are faced with two competing interests, it becomes jihad to choosethe right one, as the following Hadith
exemplify.
Aisha, wife of the Prophet asked, O Messenger of Allah,
we seejihad as the best of deeds, so shouldn't we
join it? He replied: But, thebest of jihad is a
perfect hajj (pilgrimage to Makkah)(SahihAl-Bukhari
#2784).
At another occasion a man asked the Prophet Muhammad: Should Ijoin the jihad? He asked: Do you have parents? The man
said: Yes! TheProphet said: then strive by (serving)
them!(Sahih Al-Bukhari#5972).
Yet another man asked the Messenger of Allah: What kind of jihadis better? He replied: A word of truth in front of an
oppressive ruler!(Sunan Al-Nasa'i #4209).
The Messenger of Allah, Muhammad said: ... the mujahid (one whocarries out
jihad) is he who strives against himself for the sake ofobeying
Allah, and the muhajir (one who emigrates) is he who
abandons evildeeds and sin(Sahih Ibn Hibban
#4862).
5. Having courage and steadfastness to convey the message of Islam.
The Qur'an narrates the experiences of a large number
of Prophets and goodpeople who suffered a great deal
trying to convey the message of Allah tomankind. For
examples see the Qur'an 26:1-190, 36:13-32. In the Qur'an,Allah specifically praises
those who strive to convey His message:Who is better in speech
than one who calls (other people) to Allah, worksrighteous,
and declares that he is from the Muslims(41:33).
Under adverse conditions it takes great courage to remain a Muslim, declare oneself to be a Muslim and call others to
Islam. We read in theQur'an: The (true) believers are
only those who believe in Allahand his messenger and
afterward doubt not, but strive with their wealthand
their selves for the cause of Allah. Such are the truthful(49:15).
6. Defending Islam and the community.
Allah declares in the Qur'an: To those against whom war
is made, permission is given (to defend themselves),
because they are wronged - andverily, Allah is Most
Powerful to give them victory - (they are) those whohave
been expelled from their homes in defiance of right - (for no cause)except that
they say, 'Our Lord is Allah....(Qur'an
22:39-40).
The Qur'an permits fighting to defend the religion of
Islam and theMuslims. This permission includes
fighting in self defense and for theprotection of
family and property. The early Muslims fought many battlesagainst
their enemies under the leadership of the Prophet Muhammad or hisrepresentatives. For example, when the pagans of Quraysh brought armiesagainst
Prophet Muhammad, the Muslims fought to defend their faith andcommunity.
The Qur'an adds: Fight in the cause of
Allah againstthose who fight against you, but do not
transgress limits. Lo! Allah lovesnot
aggressors. ... And fight them until persecution is no more, andreligion is for Allah. But if they desist, then let
there be no hostilityexcept against transgressors(2:190,193).
7. Helping allied people who may not be Muslim.
In the late period of the Prophet Muhammad's life the tribe of BanuKhuza'ah became his ally. They were living near Makkah which was under therule of
the pagan Quraysh, Prophet Muhammad's own tribe. The
tribe of BanuBakr, an ally of Quraysh,
with the help of some elements of Quraysh, attacked
Banu Khuza'ah and inflicted
heavy damage. Banu Khuza'ah
invokedthe treaty and demanded Prophet Muhammad to
come to their help and punishQuraysh. The Prophet
Muhammad organized a campaign against Quraysh ofMakkah which resulted in the conquest of Makkah which occured without anybattle.
8. Removing treacherous people from power.
Allah orders the Muslims in the Qur'an:
If you fear treacheryfrom any group, throw back
(their treaty) to them, (so as to be) on equalterms.
Lo! Allah loves not the treacherous(8:58).
Prophet Muhammad undertook a number of armed campaigns to removetreacherous
people from power and their lodgings. He had entered intopacts
with several tribes, however, some of them proved themselvestreacherous.
Prophet Muhammad launched armed campaigns against thesetribes,
defeated and exiled them from
9. Defending through preemptive strikes.
Indeed, it is difficult to mobilize people to fight when they see noinvaders in their territory; however, those who are
charged withresponsibility see dangers ahead of time
and must provide leadership. TheMessenger of Allah,
Muhammad, had the responsibility to protect his peopleand
the religion he established in
10. Gaining freedom to inform, educate and convey the message of Islam inan open and free environment.
Allah declares in the Qur'an: They ask you (Muhammad) concerningfighting in the Sacred Month. Say, 'Fighting
therein is a grave (offense)but graver is it in the
sight of Allah to prevent access to the path ofAllah,
to deny Him, to prevent access to the Sacred Mosque, and drive outits inhabitants. Persecution is worse than killing. Nor
will they ceasefighting you
until they turn you back from your faith, if they can. ...(Qur'an
2:217). And
those who, when an oppressive wrong isinflicted on
them, (are not cowed but) fight back(Qur'an42:39).
To gain this freedom, Prophet Muhammad said: Strive (jahidu)against the disbelievers with your hands and
tongues(Sahih IbnHibban
#4708).
The life of the Prophet Muhammad was full of striving to gain the freedomto inform and convey the message of Islam. During
his stay in Makkah heused
non-violent methods and after the establishment of his government inMadinah, by the permission of Allah, he used armed
struggle against hisenemies whenever he found it
inevitable.
11. Freeing people from tyranny.
Allah admonishes Muslims in the Qur'an:
And why should you notfight in the cause of Allah
and of those who, being weak, are ill-treated(and oppressed)? - Men, women, and
children, whose cry is: 'Our Lord!Rescue
us from this town, whose people are oppressors; and raise for usfrom You, one who will protect; and raise for us from
You, one who willhelp'(Qur'an 4:75).
The mission of the Prophet Muhammad was to free people from tyranny andexploitation by oppressive systems. Once
free, individuals in the societywere then free to
chose Islam or not. Prophet Muhammad's successorscontinued
in his footsteps and went to help oppressed people. For example, after the repeated call by the oppressed people of
The defeated rulers of
Muslims should
remove tyranny, treachery, bigotry, and ignorance and replacethem
with justice and equity. We should provide truthful knowledge and freepeople from the bondage of associationism
(shirk or multiple gods),prejudice, superstition and
mythology. Muslims remove immorality, fear,crime,
exploitation and replace them with divine morality, peace andeducation.
The Qur'an declares: Lo! Allah
commands you that yourestore deposits to their
owners, and if you judge between mankind that youjudge
justly. Lo! It is proper that Allah admonishes you. Lo! Allah is everHearer, Seer(Qur'an 4:58).
O you who believe! Stand out firmly for Allah's witnesses to
fair dealing,and let not the
hatred of others to you make you swerve to wrong and departfrom
justice. Be just: that is next to Piety and fear Allah. And Allah iswell acquainted with all that you do(Qur'an
5:8).
And of
those whom We have created there is a nation who guides with theTruth and establishes justice with it(Qur'an
7:181).
Lo! Allah enjoins justice and kindness, and giving to kinsfolk, and forbidslewdness and abomination and wickedness. He
exhorts you in order that youmay take heed(Qur'an 16:90).
Those who,
if We give them power in the land, establish prescribed prayers(salah) and pay the poor-due (zakah)
and enjoin right conduct and forbidevil. And with
Allah rests the end (and decision) of (all) affairs(Qur'an
22:41).
The unequivocal and
emphatic answer is NO! The Qur'an declares: Letthere
be no compulsion (or coercion) in the religion (Islam). The rightdirection
is distinctly clear from error(Qur'an 2:256).
Here is agood study of the question of the spread of
Islam by a Christian missionary,T.W.
Arnold:"... of any organized attempt to force the acceptance ofIslam on the non-Muslim population, or of any systematic persecutionintended to stamp out the Christian religion, we
hear nothing. Had thecaliphs chosen to adopt either
course of action, they might have swept awayChristianity
as easily as Ferdinand and Isabella drove Islam out of
Islamdoes not teach nor do Muslims desire conversion
of any people for fear,greed,
marriage or any other form of coercion.
Inconclusion, jihad in Islam is striving in the way
of Allah by pen, tongue,hand,
media and, if inevitable, with arms. However, jihad in Islam does notinclude striving for individual or national power,
dominance, glory, wealth,prestige
or pride.

Exploding the myth
One of the many short comings which has arisen in the
West, is judging Islam by the conduct of a minority of its people. By doing
this, segments of Western society have deliberately played off the desperate
actions of many Muslims, and have given it the name of Islam. Such behaviour is clearly not objective and seeks to distort the
reality of Islam. For if such a thing was done Judge a religion by the conduct
of its people) then we too could say that all Christianity is about is child
molesting and homosexuality [1] whilst Hinduism was all about looting and
breaking up mosques [2]. Generalising in such a
manner is not seen as being objective, yet we find that the Western world is
foremost in propagating this outlook on Islam. So what is the reality of Islam?
How does one dispel the myths which have been created and spread so viciously?
The only way to examine Islam is to simply examine its belief system. Look at
its sources, the Qur'an and Sunna,
and see what they have to say. This is the way to find the truth about what
Islam says about terror, terrorism and terrorists. One
who is sincerely searching for the truth, will do it no other way. The very
name Islam comes from the Arabic root word 'salama'
which means peace. Islam is a religion which is based upon achieving peace
through the submission to the will of Allah. Thus, by this very simple
linguistic definition, one can ascertain as to what the nature of this religion
is. If such a religion is based on the notion of peace, then how is it that so
many acts done by its adherents are contrary to peace? The answer is simple.
Such actions, if not sanctioned by the religion, have no place with it. They
are not Islamic and should not be thought of as Islamic.
Jihad
The word jihad sends shivers down the spines of many Westerners. They readily
equate this term with violence and oppression. However, it must be said that
the meaning of jihad, as a 'holy war', is something which is totally foreign
and not from Islam. If anything, such a description belongs more so to
Christianity and its adherents. It was terms like this which were used to
justify the slaughter and pillage of towns and cities during the crusades by
the Christians. By simply looking into the sources of Islam, one is able to
know that the true meaning of jihad is to strive/make
effort in the way of Allah. Thus striving in the way of Allah can be both
peaceful and physical. The Prophet Muhammed (saws)
said:
"The best jihad is (by) the one who strives against his own self for
Allah, The Mighty and Majestic" [3]
In the Qur'an, Allah also says:
"So obey not the disbelievers, but make a great jihad (effort) against
them (by preaching) with it (the Qur'an)"
(Surah Al-Furqan 25:52)
By controlling and fighting against ones desires, the Muslims can then also
physically exert themselves in the path of Allah. It is this physical or
combative jihad which receives so much criticism. Because of the sheer
ignorance of this type of jihad Islam is regarded as terror, and Muslims are
regarded as terrorists. However, the very purpose of this physical jihad is to
raise the word of Allah uppermost. By doing this, it liberates and emancipates all
those who are crying out for freedom all over the world. If the likes of the
pacifists of this world had their way, then the world would indeed be full of
anarchy and mischief. The combative jihad seeks to correct this as Allah says
in the Qur'an:
"And if Allah did not check one set of people by means of another, the
Earth would be full of mischief. But Allah is full of bounty to the
worlds"
(Surah Al-Baqarah 2:251)
Such would be the corruption on this Earth if there had never been a combative
jihad that Allah says:
"For had it not been that Allah checks one set of people by means of
another, monasteries, churches, synagogues and mosques, wherein the name of
Allah is mentioned much, would surely have been pulled down. Indeed Allah will
help those who help His (cause). Truly Allah is All strong, All mighty"
(Surah Al-Hajj 22:40)
This combative jihad being both defensive and offensive, is something which is
commanded by Allah upon the Muslims. Through this command the oppressed and
weak are rescued from the tyranny of the world:
"And what is the matter with you that you do not fight in the cause of
Allah and for those weak, ill treated and oppressed among men, women and
children whose only cry is; 'Our Lord, rescue us from this town whose people
are oppressors and raise for us from you one who will protect and raise for us
from you one who will help"
(Surah An-Nisa 4:75)
Anyone who knows the early history of Islam, will know that all those nations
and empires which came under the fold of Islam were indeed previously
oppressed. When the companions of the Prophet Muhammed
(saws) went out for the offensive jihad against the Egyptians, the Persians and
the Romans, we find that the people did not resist against them at all. Rather,
they accepted Islam on such a scale, that it is inconceivable that the jihad of
Islam could be anything other then a liberation for these people; a liberation
from centuries of tyranny. In fact, with the Byzantine Egyptians and the people
of
"
when it is said to them; 'Make not mischief on the Earth', they say;
'We are only peace makers'. Indeed they are the ones who make mischief, but
they perceive it not"
(Surah Al-Baqarah 2:11-12)
The fault of these sheep was
that they belonged to Palestinians. Jewish cultists who insist on living on
land confiscated from Palestinians hate everything Palestinian
The hypocrisy of the West is indeed astounding.
By looking at the rules and regulations of this combative jihad it will be
clear to any sincere person that this is indeed the religion of truth. When
fighting an unjust enemy, no matter how unjust they are, it is forbidden by
Islam that their retreating forces are mutilated, tortured or slaughtered. The
treacherous violation of treaties and carrying out assassinations after a cease
fire, are also prohibited. Allah says in the Qur'an:
"And fight in the way of Allah those who fight you. But do not transgress
the limits. Truly Allah loves not the transgressors"
(Surah Al-Baqarah 2:190)
Not transgressing the limits means not to kill women and children, for the
Messenger of Allah (saws) "forbade the killing of women and children"
[5]. Not transgressing the limits means that the elderly, the sick, monks,
worshippers and hired labourers are not attacked. Not
transgressing the limits means not killing animals wantonly, burning crops and
vegetation, polluting waters and destroying homes, monasteries, churches and synagogues:
"Allah does not forbid you to deal justly and kindly with those who fought
not against you on account of religion, nor drove you out of your homes.
Indeed, Allah loves those who deal with equity"
(Surah Al-Mumtahinah 60:8)
After reading such passages from the Qur'an and
knowing about what Islam commands and prohibits in jihad, the rules of warfare
are given a new meaning; a meaning of justice. How sad it is then, that whilst
Islam is condemned for striking terror into the hearts of the people, the likes
of the Serbs, the Indian army in Kashmir and the Israeli soldiers in
So what about suicide bombing, is this too a part of jihad in
Allah's path? From what has already been stated above, it can be deduced
that this is not from the religion. However, unfortunately many Muslims have
taken suicide bombing as being a virtuous act by which one receives reward.
This could not be further from the truth. The Prophet (saws) said: "Those
who go to extremes are destroyed" [6]. Suicide bombing is undoubtedly an
extremity which has reached the ranks of the Muslims. In the rules of warfare,
we find no sanction for such an act from the behaviour
and words of the Prophet Muhammed (saws) and his
companions. Unfortunately, today (some misguided) Muslims believe that such
acts are paving the way for an Islamic revival and a return to the rule of
Islam's glorious law. However, we fail to bear in mind that the Prophet (saws)
said:
"Do not be delighted by the action of anyone, until you see how he ends
up" [7]
So, for example what is the end of a suicide bomber in
"He who kills himself with anything, Allah will torment him with that in
the fire of Hell" [8]
Some are under the misconception that by killing oneself for an Islamic cause,
one commits an act which deserves
"A person performs the deeds which to the people appears to be the deeds
befitting the dweller of Paradise, but he is in fact one of the dwellers of the
Fire" [9]
The taking of ones life which Allah has given as a trust to the human, is a
great sin. Likewise the taking of other lives (which is so often the case with
suicide bombing) is also forbidden, as human life is indeed precious:
"...If anyone killed a person not in retaliation for murder or to spread
mischief in the land, it would be as if he killed the whole of mankind. And
(likewise) if anyone saved a life, it would be as if he saved the whole of
mankind"
(Surah Al-Maaida 5:32)
Thus, all other types of extremities such as hostage taking, hijacking and
planting bombs in public places, are clearly forbidden in Islam.
This

The Media
By going through the teachings of Islam, it is clear that such a religion has
only come to benefit mankind - not to destroy it. So why is there so much
hatred for this noble religion in the West? The answer is simple, the media. It
is the Jewish influenced media of the West which has portrayed Islam to be
something that it is not. During the 70's and 80's when the PLO (Palestine
Liberation Organisation) were
carrying out daring highjacks on the worlds airways,
the media in the West portrayed it as being Islamic. When the Shi'ite suicide bombers of the 80's were causing so much
havoc in the
"They intend to put out the light of Allah with their mouths, but Allah
will complete His light even though the disbelievers hate (it)"
(Surah As-Saff 61:8)
Whilst trying to destroy Islam through this instrument of the media, the Jews
clearly try to portray an image of themselves as being the oppressed people.
Every year, we are reminded as to how many Jews perished under the Nazis in
World War II. We are made to feel sorry for these same people who have gone on
to commit so many crimes upon the Palestinian people. Some may say that this is
a racist and biased viewpoint. But we say; If this media was not run and
orchestrated by the Jews and was truly neutral, then why are Menachem Begin and Yitzhak Shamir,
two former Israeli prime ministers, not held aloft as being terrorists? Anyone
who knows about the history of the Palestinian occupation will tell you that
these two men were members of the Stern Gang and Irgun,
two notorious Jewish terror groups who killed many innocent people [13]. If
this media was truly impartial, then why does it not tell about the extent of
the Israeli bombardment and illegal occupation of
With such immense pressure against it, it is indeed a blessing from Allah that
Islam goes from strength to strength. It continues to grow faster then any
other religion in the Western world, conquering the hearts and minds of
thousands. All this should not even surprise us though, for Allah has promised
us that this religion will prevail:
"It is He who has sent His Messenger with the guidance and the religion of
truth, so that He may make it victorious over all other religions, even though
the disbelievers detest it"
(Surah As-Saff 61:9)
It is a must that humanity comes towards the religion of Islam. Without it, we
will continue to slip down the road of inequity and darkness. With it we can
establish a society of justice and peace. Religion of terror?
... no. The way forward? ... yes.
"There is no compulsion in religion. The right path has indeed become
distinct from the wrong. So whoever rejects false worship and believes in
Allah, then he has grasped the most trustworthy handhold that will never break.
And Allah is All Hearing, All Knowing"
(Surah Al-Baqarah 2:256)
